The core business of Pdat Oy, a specialist in the plastics industry, is injection molds for plastic parts, but the added value it offers to customers begins much earlier on the product development path. Its experts advise on avoiding pitfalls that hinder sales success already in the design phase.
As innovation progresses to product development, decisive moments are encountered that define the entire product lifecycle: The product's manufacturing method affects its price, quality, appearance, manufacturability, and production scalability. The experts of Pdat Oy, a specialist in the plastics industry, guide you to anticipate your own product's sales success right from the start.
"Initially, volumes may be small, but if there's even a slight belief in sales growth, injection molding of plastic parts should be considered at the very beginning of the design. As production volume increases, injection molding is the best option in terms of both quality and cost," says Sales Director Ari Lehtonen.
Manufacturing plastic parts using 3D printing is an affordable and fast option that requires little initial capital. However, it can also be misleading in assessing manufacturability, say Lehtonen and Technical Director Totti Nurmela. Nurmela points out that 3D printing and other low-volume manufacturing methods allow for shapes that may not be possible with injection molding. However, the scalability limits of 3D printing or other low-volume techniques will eventually be reached.
"We create a roadmap for each project, with clear steps for different production methods as demand grows."
"It's a difficult situation if a product's sales take off well, but meeting demand requires redesigning the product. Changes might even affect the product's design," Nurmela notes.
Redesigning can take months before a new injection-molded product is in production. The design might also affect several other non-injection-molded parts of the product to make the whole system work.
In Pdat's production model, the manufacturability of plastic parts by injection molding is considered already in the design phase, even if the first batches are made using low-volume techniques. This way, mold investments do not pose an initial risk, but as production grows, investments in injection molding are possible without changes to the products.
"We create a roadmap for each project, with clear steps for different production methods as demand grows. This way, our customer doesn't end up in a dead end on the threshold of success," Lehtonen says.
Pdat's main product is the manufacturing of injection molds. The factories are located in the Turku region and in China. Lehtonen and Nurmela emphasize that the mold alone is not the main thing; the work is strongly focused on the customers' products, whose high-quality and cost-effective manufacturing is enabled by a well-designed mold.
"Our main business is to manufacture a tool, but it cannot be detached from its context. The product and the mold are only as good as the product design and styling allow for in the manufacturing phase," Nurmela compares.
In 2019, Pdat began investments in injection molding machinery alongside mold manufacturing, as well as in new premises in Lieto. Thanks to these investments, Pdat can take responsibility for the entire process from the design of plastic parts to their mold manufacturing and further to the manufacturing of plastic parts. The service package is tailored as needed.
"Our own injection molding facility also allows for running various tests, whereby the operation of the entire production process is verified, and the customer has also been able to see everything themselves without traveling further," Nurmela says.
Pdat's operating model gives the customer the opportunity to choose the most cost-effective manufacturing method for the entire product lifecycle. Lehtonen says that often the company that developed the product specializes in something other than the design or manufacturing of plastic products. One partner might be chosen for design, another manufactures the molds, and the molding is ordered from a third factory.
"At that point, there are quite a few actors involved. In such cases, there is a high risk that not all essential information flows through the entire chain. In problem situations, liability issues are often challenging."
Pdat's experts point out that plastic parts play a critically important role in both product sales and use.
"Poor-quality plastic parts can ruin the quality feel of the entire product. The earlier we are involved in the design, the more certainly we can achieve a high-quality and durable product. Through cooperation, we create the best conditions for success."
Designing a plastic product is also designing a mold!
